Shopping
is one of the great experiences of Egypt, whether in the crowded
bazaars or more formal specialty shops. To prepare for shopping
in Egypt, read Brad's tips on bargaining
and dealing with touts, then keep an eye out or ask around for
the salesmen listed below, who we found to be honest and friendly.

Cairo
ancient
history |
Step
back in time, out of the modernity of downtown, into the historic
and fascinating world of Islamic Cairo. Walk the dirt roads and
narrow alleyways, take in the street life, explore and shop in the
bazaars, wander into the many mosques. All mosques are free to enter
and you'll be most welcome, except at prayer times. In the bazaars,
shop around first, then bargain hard. Roads are rough, so wear sturdy
shoes and the people are friendly, so say 'Salaam!' |

| Pyramids
of Giza
ancient
history |
One of the wonders of the ancient world, the Pyramids are merely
a 30-minute drive out of downtown Cairo, sitting in the desert on
the edge of the suburb of Giza. The pyramids and Sphinx can easily
be explored on foot, but there are also plenty of camels and donkeys
to take visitors around the entire site, just be prepared to haggle
on a price. Ticket includes main access to the site; additional
tickets must be bought to enter any of the pyramids narrow shafts. |

Sailing
boat
trip |
Egyptians have been sailing on feluccas for millennia, and the experience
is not to be missed, especially in Aswan. Dozens of boat men will
compete for your business, but if you want to quickly find a fun,
honest and experienced local captain, go straight to Ali
Taha, who docks his boat, ZamZam, at Emy Restaurant.
He offers fair prices and can follow any itinerary you like, stopping
at islands and villages, or just sailing around Elephantine Island
to take in the scenery. Ali: 012-476-9517 |

| Karnak
Temple
temple |
Really as impressive and awe-inspiring as the pyramids, Karnak Temple
was built on a massive scale to house the gods of Pharaonic times.
One could spend hours just exploring the Temple of Amun, the main
enclosure which covers almost 62 acres with towering columns, obelisks,
intricately carved statues, and hieroglyphic writings. In wintertime,
go mid-day to avoid the morning and afternoon tour groups, and consider
bringing lunch to enjoy in shade amidst the grandeur. $ |

Horizon Balloons
hot-air

If you ever wanted to take a hot-air balloon flight, Luxor is just
the place, where you can soar above ancient temples between the
stunning Valley of the Kings and the River Nile. There are a couple
of companies in Luxor to choose from, but Magic Horizon is one that
lives up to its high reputation. The experienced captain controls
the balloon with ease and skill, pointing out the many temples and
villages that dot the landscape below. Each flight is different,
depending on wind conditions, but expect to spend 35-50 minutes
in the air. 002 095 236 50 60 $$$ |

| Valley
of the Kings
tombs |
Secluded in a barren desert depression amidst the Theban Hills,
this valley is a true reminder of the Pharaohs obsession with death
and eternal life. Venture inside a couple of the deeply dug tunnels
and chambers of the 64 tombs to find intricate carvings and murals,
stone sarcophaguses and sometimes even a mummy. The valley is very
hot but with several spots to rest in the shade. We then recommend
taking your time enjoying a short walk over the hills for a panoramic
view of the Nile Valley and the temples of the Theban Necropolis.
