This
1892 Victorian style home is a beautifully restored heritage building
in the leafy suburb of James Bay, a lovely five-minute walk to Inner
Harbour and downtown. Surrounded by a lush garden, this pretty house
looks small from the outside, but actually has two lounge areas, a
classic dining room and eight spacious bedrooms, all with private
bathrooms and terrace and some with kitchenette or jacuzzi bathtub.
Gracious hosts Don and Fernando have decorated the elegant home with
international art and treasures and offer a leisurely gourmet breakfast
that is truly unforgettable. 224 Superior St. 250-389-0012 $$$ Fernando's

Turtle
Refuge Hostel hostel
When
we visited this hostel, it was still being developed, with new bathrooms
being put in and some construction work being done. Yet the place
was already teeming with young travelers who had been there for days
and weeks playing music, lounging on couches, cooking dinners together
and sharing their stories. The manager, Ben, tended to everyone's
needs and the three turtles piled on top of each other in the aquarium.
With dorms, double and family rooms, high speed and wireless internet,
and a communal kitchen, the Turtle Refuge is practical, clean and
cheap. But most of all, it's fun. 1608 Quadra St. 250-386-4471 $
