was first colonized by Europeans in the early 16th century and has
been an important center for the Maya culture. It has had a turbulent
past of military coups and corruption but these days, as a democracy
is now in place, Honduras has become a safe, welcoming country ready
for the adventurous traveler.
It has amazing ancient ruins, beaches, rain forests, and mountains,
as well as the Bay Islands off the northern coast which offer some
of the finest diving and snorkeling areas in the Western Caribbean.
