Though
just a few hundred meters from Bocas Town, Isla Carenero feels like
a world away, and Hotel Tierra Verde is the best place to enjoy the
serenity of the island. Panamanian brothers Ivan and Cookie have built
a beautiful home from scratch, with polished wood, a long veranda
looking out to the ocean, and cozy rooms with large windows and air-conditioning.
Both brothers are surfers, have extensive knowledge of the 12
surf spots around the islands, and set up surf trips for their
guests. Best to book in advance. (507) 757-9903 Isla Carenero $$

PANAMA
CITY
We
didn't plan to stay in Panama city for very long as there are so many
things the rest of the country has to offer, but we ended up being
there for a few days as we found some fantastic nightlife and met
some great local people. We didn't specifically promote any places,
but we can recommend Voyager International Hostel (aim for the air-conditioned
rooms or you will die of humidity!) and the new more upmarket Hotel
Milan, both in the El Cangrejo district of the city.

Simple
but spacious beachfront rooms are well-suited to backpackers, surfers
and budget travelers looking to get off the beaten track. Rooms are
a bit rustic, but generally clean, with patios and hammocks in the
front. Movies, surf videos, and music are played in the outside lounge
area under the huge tiki hut where three home-cooked meals a day can
be included for a great price. A bit tough to get to, but contact
Panama Surf Tours for more information, to book a room or enquire
about transport and tours from Panama City. $
