JOBS - UNIVERSITY ENGLISH TEACHER
November 2004
Dasos Loizou, British:

Dasos LoizouTeaching English in Japan is big business. You see advertisements everywhere for private and group lessons and then there are teachers that work in public and private schools and universities. Dasos has had 5 years of extensive teaching experience around the world, in Hungary, Germany, London and now Tokyo, so we thought we'd interview him to see how teaching at an all girls University in Tokyo measured up to his other experiences.

Dasos's main day job is working on a university campus of around 3000 girls in Kanagawa-ken, just outside of Tokyo. The university also includes an elementary, junior and senior high-school where he works within the elementary and junior high sections. He has an average of 12 contact hours a week but is expected to be at the school each day from 8:30am to 4pm. He got the job through an agency called EDAJ (Educational Development Association of Japan). The University approached 3 companies like EDAJ, and Dasos was one of the chosen candidates. He wowed them with his charm and extensive teaching experience, and landed the job.

Dasos also works at night doing private and business teaching via contracts he receives from two agencies called Interlang and ILC / International Language Centre. One of them is a contract teaching at Universal Music.

As opposed to most teaching jobs around Tokyo at places like NOVA, GABA and Berlitz etc, where you can get the job if you hold any university degree, Dasos's school requires experience and either a teaching degree or English teaching certification. Dasos was lucky enough to work with pioneers of the ESL field at a place called the International House in Hungary and completed his certification there. He also has tons of experience working with children and says that you need "an abundance of enthusiasm and patience" when teaching them. For this he has attained a separate qualification from Budapest called the Young Learners Methodology Certificate. He also has BA degree in Linguistics and experience teaching adults of all levels who are studying for different reasons such as business and exam preparation, qualification and syllabus writing or just general English study.

He doesn't want to stop there either! He has aspirations to manage his own language school, so is looking to do a masters in EFL (open Uni from UK and Tokyo universities while in Tokyo).
