Golden
Week

The
Japanese have 14 national holidays per year. Most people don't celebrate
the actual holiday, but love having a reason to take off work. There is
Sports Day, Coming-of-Age Day, Foundation Day, Spring Equinox Day, Autumn
Equinox Day, Culture Day, Labour Thanksgiving Day, Marine Day, Respect-for-the-Aged
Day, Constitution Day, New Years Day, Dolls Day, Green Day, and Children's
Day.
Four of these holidays are at the end of April/beginning of May, so the
time became known as Golden Week, and the whole country takes the week
off. Bullet train and plane ticket prices triple, so we jumped in the
car instead and drove 17 hours to Shikoku Island, the
smallest of Japan's four major islands. Shikoku is a green mass of mountains
surrounded by the ocean; perfect for a surf and camping trip! I also fit
in a day trip to Hakone, to see Mt. Fuji tower over lake
Ashinoko, and another afternoon was spent admiring endless carpets of
flowers in our local mountain town of Chichibu.
Miss and love you all xoxxoxoxo
