Island-hopping
& Snorkel trip
boat hire |
If you want to meet a great boatman without having to haggle with
all the others, just give Efren Maucalayo a call. Though
his English is limited, he can let you know which are the best places
to explore and snorkel and arrange the trip at any time of the day
you would like. Snorkeling at Crocodile Island and then coming back
around the island at sunset is a great trip for a couple hours.
Look for Efren on the beach or reach him by mobile phone: 0920-368-3975 |

- MANILA |
Baywalk
food/live music |
This
new attraction to Manila is a winner. About half a dozen restaurants
with large menus set up tables, umbrellas, lanterns and candles
along the bay each night. The specialty is barbeque and every place
has great live music. Kapalua and Yakitori Dori are both recommended.
Or you can just stroll the brightly lit, palm lined walk. |
Intramuros
old walled city |
Take
in some of the Philippines' Spanish history in this walled city
which used to be the capital of Manila. Walk the cobblestone streets
or take a horse cart ride past the old buildings, stopping to see
St. Agustin, the oldest stone church in the Philippines and Manila
Cathedral which has been destroyed six times by typhoons, earthquakes,
fires, and war. Follow the high school kids to one of the local
eateries for a break. |
Robinson's
shopping center |
Escape
the heat of the city and enjoy endless shopping, eateries, and cinema
in one of Robinson's huge chain of shopping centers. The stores
and restaurants are a mix of local and international, and recent
movies cost just over US$1. |
Seair
airline

|
There
are around 4 domestic airlines to choose from when island hopping
around the Philippines. Seair have reasonable prices compared to
the other carriers and plenty of flights each day to all the major
destinations like Boracay and Palawan. Seair gave us a 50% discount
on 2 flights in conjunction with Afro-Asian Travel
and Tours which we were most grateful for. 02-884-1521 |

Aviation
scenic flight |
Formed
in 1993, Omni Aviation is a flight school for private or commercial
pilots and also provides 45-minute scenic flights in 4-seater
Cessnas over Mt. Pinatubo. The volcano erupted in 1991, leaving
a green lake at the 1780 meter summit and lush fields below. Manager
Aljess and his staff are very professional and friendly, and the
flight is well worth the trip from Manila! 045-892-6664 |

| June
Marquez
boatmen / guide |
Being
from one of the small islands off Puerto Galera, June is a natural
boatman and knowledgeable guide. He took us to all the best snorkel
spots and beaches, then guided us to the indigenous villages, translated
for us, cut coconuts for us to drink, and finally cooked us an incredibly
delicious barbeque on a secluded beach. Just tell him which things
you're interested in doing and make a plan together. He's not only
a great guide and boatman, but easily a good friend. No matter where
you stay in Puerto Galera, go to Portofino resort to find June or
call him at 0917-349-8451 and he and his brother Joebey will take
good care of you. |
