JOBS: GERMANY / ESL TEACHER

October 2004
Sherry Shaw, American:

students working on scientific observation plant journalsSherry is enjoying living in Germany, teaching academic English to children who have another language in the home. Her students are all elementary ages, from Kindergarten to Eighth Grade.

She lives in a rural village, but says the best part of the job is traveling to all the exotic European cities that are so close by...

One of many local castlesSherry says: "The traveling really has to be the best part of my job (although the teaching environment really is one of the best in the world). It is soooo inexpensive to travel in Europe once you're here. Round-trip flights on the cheap airlines cost about 50 euro ($75ish U.S.). Plus you can travel anytime of year and avoid the crowds. We are going to Stockholm for a 3-day weekend next...we want to see the bar that is made out of ice...the whole bar! Glasses and everything! That's not a trip I could ever justify paying for from the States. Just driving around the area is a trip too. Feeling like a real pastry... go to Metz, France. Not good enough? Try Paris. Not in the mood for pastries but feel like something baked? Amsterdam is only a few hours away. The possibilities are endless and anytime is a good time. Life is good here! Thanks to Bex and Brad for coming up with such a fantastic idea!"

Tschuess,

Sherry

Drawbacks:
"I would have liked to work at an international school, as some days it feels like I never left the States."

Highlights:
"The kids, awesome families, easy travel opportunities, the free housing, and the big salary."
