Speaking of Aussie Mates and Sydneysiders, they
are
as diverse as the Americans in New York City. All over the city and suburbs,
you can find Little Korea, Little Italy, Little Spain, Big Lebanon, of
course Chinatown, and the list goes on and on. Class wise, the people
with money live in the north and the east suburbs, and the rest of us
live in the west and the south.
Sydney as
a whole is amazing. The city is beautiful and exciting, and the Aussies
make even a busy city like this seem laid back and friendly (no way could
you wear flip-flops in London!). Everywhere you go there's water, whether
it's a skyscraper lined harbor, a boat filled bay, a ferry run river,
or a surfer studded beach. And no matter if you're in the city or the
suburbs, you can always find gorgeous parks and woodland reserves which
instantly transport you to the countryside.
The suburbs
remind me of America, except the baseball fields are cricket grounds,
they drive on the left side of the road, and kookaburras (birds that laugh
like hyenas) and possums (which look like cocker spaniel sized rats) live
in the huge Eucalyptus trees overhead. The trains are like nothing I've
seen in New York, Chicago, D.C., London, Malaysia, or Singapore...they
are all double-decker with padded moveable bench seats, and some are even
air-conditioned!
I'm spoilt
for choice on nightlife as Sydney has more cafes, restaurants, pubs, bars,
and nightclubs than you can imagine, and I'm trying to see them all!
Wish me luck!
